Owners of buildings in South Africa have less than a year left to obtain and prominently display an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) in the foyer of their building or risk a fine of R5 million, five years imprisonment or both, as defined in the regulations gazetted on 8 December 2020 and apply until 7 December 2022.

Under the EPC regulations, buildings in South Africa need to have their energy performance assessed by an accredited party, which will issue an EPC that rates the building in terms of energy efficiency. On the 8th December 2020, the South African government gazetted new regulations that will put the squeeze on building owners in the country to become more energy efficient. They will be required to display their energy performance certificate at the entrance to their building. The certificate must be issued by an accredited body. For the full article click here
